I recently attenderd (spelling error, but I like it this way) the 2022 Winter Conference for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). First, I owe a huge hug to this organization for the boost it’s given my writing career. Second, if SCBWI were a “secret society”, the hoods of the cloaks would definitely have bunny ears. It is the nicest group of sharing, caring writers ever. Here are some take-aways from the conference.
“Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you are.”-Brian Selznick
“Every book is a brick in the wall of your overall career.”
— Samantha Fabien
“Be kind. Be professional. Be open to feedback.”-I don’t know. I was so into listening and writing in my craft notebook, I didn’t make a note of who was talking during the Editors panel!
“Mistakes are important. 50% of writing and publishing is trying and making mistakes.”
— Stephanie Garber
“There are a lot of elements you cannot control… What you can control is your writing. Keep writing.”-Thao Le
“This business is persistence.”
— Jem Chambers-Black
